Learning how to do electric vehicle conversions is not that difficult. Anyone can learn how to do it.

· A vehicle to do the conversion on

Finding the right vehicle is not that difficult as any small car or truck is a good candidate for this project. We are now leaning towards using small trucks after doing 3 conversions of our own. Small trucks are light, strong and have lots of room for batteries in the frame or in the box.

Using small cars is a great option too.

We liked the project because it didn't require any special tools or skills to speak of. Now, I don't know about you but I'm not auto mechanic, but we really wanted to learn how to do electric vehicle conversions.

It was a bit of work, but it was manageable, taking only a little over a week to complete.

We saved a lot of money too by using the sources listed in the plans to find free DC motors and even free batteries for our vehicle.

Since these are the two most expensive items it was good to know. These items bought new would have added a lot of cost.

As it was we only spent a few hundred dollars on the conversion including the cost of the plans. It wasn't much more than a typical repair bill on our old gas engine car, and those came along frequently too...

There is typically very little maintenance costs with electric vehicle conversions too. Very few moving parts and simpler systems mean that it doesn't break down as often.

We have been told that the DC motor used will go hundreds of thousands of miles and last through normal driving in at least 2 vehicles. That will definitely keep long term costs down too.

Our electric vehicle (1997 Toyota Tacoma) travels at 50 mph on the highway and has a range between charges of over 200 miles. It takes us where we want to go just like our old car, with some significant differences.

There are no toxic fumes, and driving by gas stations on your way is a real joy.
